R13

right-hand pinky keysThe Buffet R13 clarinet was redesigned  in 1995 and has maintained its reputation as one of the best clarinets on the market.  Robert Carre, a long-time designer for Buffet Crampon, was responsible for the new R13.  Carre is widely respected and even has a model (Buffet’s RC) named in his honor.

There were minor changes from the original R13′s that had been around since the mid-fifties. The bell was shortened very slightly and some tone hole placements were adjusted.

This is the least expensive of the R13 lineup, especially when fitted with nickel plated keys.  It is also available with silver plated keys, with a price increase in the range of $200.  The R 13 is a professional grade clarinet but Buffet says it is suitable for every musician, from students to professionals.

It is difficult to find any negative reviews of this clarinet. Well made, easy blowing and with a great sound, it has remained a mainstay of the Buffet lineup. It is less expensive than many of the top pro models from Buffet and other manufacturers, making it attainable for more people. All in all an excellent clarinet.
